Travel Hiring vs Perm Hiring

Perm Positions:

Managers sort through all candidates, select preferred ones, invest time to connect (often multiple interviews) in person bc they personally need to qualify the candidate & find the right long term fit for their existing team chemistry.

Travel Positions:

        1.      Every profile submitted has been screened to hiring managers specs prior so every candidate is qualified.

        2.      Travel positions are temporary, facilities have less exposure, and can cancel contracts if they feel the need.

        3.      The better the job location and pay the more submittals.

        4.      Managers are aware Travelers submit to multiple jobs when looking for their next assignment and generally don't                            notify facilities or answer calls once they've accepted a new position.

        5.      Hiring personnel have multiple travel positions they need to fill constantly.

The accumulative result:

        1.      When you get a call, 80% of the time they already plan to offer!  The calls are usually brief, 5-10 mins. They are simply

confirming the candidate is still available (and gives both parties an opportunity ask/answer questions if there are any)

        2.      If you miss the call - they simply move down the call list to the next candidate.

        3.      They can offer multiple people the same job, first to accept gets the job.

        4.      Answering the call or calling right back when missed is THE Key to getting the offer!  Of Course you can't sit and wait

for a call & if you're on shift you shouldn't be on the phone.

Additionally:

You should only be submitted to Jobs/locations/rates that you want and will accept if offered. So every call from a facility should

be an acceptance unless something goes crazy wrong in the interview.

GSA

https://www.gsa.gov/travel/plan-book/per-diem-rates

You can look up the max rates for housing stipends and weekly per diem using the GSA.  You can simply take the daily rate multiply it by 7 and that would be your max rate.  Try to keep in mind you may not always get a max rate depending on what the hospital is offering in the bill rate.

Take the Housing Stipend!!  The housing stipend and the weekly per diem are tax free.  When traveling you are only getting taxed on the hourly rate!

Selecting Your Travel Assignment

When choosing a travel position it is very important to prioritize your wants verses needs.  The top reasons medical professionals travel is for new location, money, and to see friends and family.  Other important things could be shift, blocking scheduling, or guaranteed hours 36/48.  In the perfect world all six fit the assignment. Unfortunately that is not always possible.  Try to keep an open mind especially if it's your first travel assignment.  If half of the wants are met, it would be a great start!!!

1. Location

2. Money

3. Friends and Family

4. Shift

5. Block Scheduling

6. Hours Guaranteed 36 or 48
